One Nation Recovery Papers: Global Britain & Development report

A report authored by Anthony Mangnall regarding the FCDO merger, international development and UK aid.

This year the Prime Minister announced the merger of the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to create the new Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Responses to this decision have been divided both within Westminster and on the international stage. Some have welcomed the move as a concerted effort to ensure the UK’s foreign policy and development reflects the objectives of a ‘Global Britain’ post Brexit, while others have raised concerns that this will detract from the UK’s internationally applauded aid objectives.

Anthony Mangnall, Chair of the APPG for the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative, has authored the “Global Britain and Development” report which also includes contributions from other members of the One Nation Caucus of Conservative MPs including Jeremy Hunt, Sir Malcolm Rifkind and Andrew Mitchell. The report explores the ways in which the merger can strengthen UK aid policy, considering what the priorities of the new FCDO should be; how the FCDO should be structured and scrutinised; and what international engagement should be taken.
